ArtPrize 2015

Updated: Apr 5, 2020

I’m very excited to have a drawing showing at ArtPrize 2015! ArtPrize is an art competition in downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan from September 23 - October 11 where over 1,500 works of art are on display at more than 160 venues in a three-square mile area. My drawing will be located at the Holiday Inn Downtown Grand Rapids. The show at the Holiday Inn is going to be absolutely beautiful. I’m really proud to be among so many other talented artists.

My ArtPrize 2015 piece is a graphite pencil drawing of my Great Grandmother, Anna Owens. I drew it for my dad as a present this past Christmas. I’m very thankful to him for loaning it back to me to display it at ArtPrize.

My Great Grandmother, Anna Owens, has always been a symbol of faith and longevity to me. She lived to be one month shy of 103 years old. She was born in Hope, Michigan in 1889. She was Irish, Catholic and was a schoolteacher in a one-room schoolhouse. She had 8 children, 45 grandchildren and 63 great grandchildren. We have lost count of how many great, great grandchildren she has. She was an ordinary person to the world, but she was considered to be extraordinary by her family.

I love drawing people. It’s exciting to watch a portrait come alive and to capture the light that shines in the person that I’m drawing. This particular portrait was really fun to draw because I love drawing pattern and texture.

I’m honored to share my drawing with ArtPrize visitors. I would also love your vote! When you go to ArtPrize, each art piece is marked with a vote code number (mine is 62031). You can download the Art Prize app on your mobile device, and vote right in front of the drawing. There are also voting kiosks throughout the Art Prize zone.
